I find this book very captivating since both the writing and the storyline were very well done. Even the ending wasn't what I had expected, I was somehow satisfied.
What I hate the most when it comes to fictional characters is the lack of personality and complexity. Luckily, Riley wasn't one of them. From the start, Riley amazed me with how much a good friend a wonderful son he was. I enjoyed getting to know him and asides from pining over his best friend's girl, he was a great guy. The other characters, such as Trip, Sarah, Natalie, and Tannis were as well-written. I loved that each of them was distinctive.
The main genre is mystery and the fantastic elements are pretty light. Therefore, if you are looking for a book with intense paranormal themed, you might be a little disappointed.
As for me, I think the mystery which might not have been incredibly exceptional, but it still sucked me in and I had a good time trying to piece the clues together (which I failed miserably.) The fantasy/sci-fi part was okay for me as well, though a little more detail on that would have been more than appreciated.
The romance was what bugged me the most as I'm not a huge fan of love triangle. It was a little too cliche how Riley was secretly in love with his best friend's girlfriend and since I'm not planning to spoil this book for anyone, let's just say it isn't that original when it comes to the romantic part of this book.
As I have already mentioned, I liked the writing as it had a nice flow and the wording was really good, so was the pace. Normally when I read a book that jumped back and forth between the present and the past, I tend to find it confusing and rather boring. It wasn't the case in this book. I loved getting a glimpse of the past.
All in all, it was a well-written book with wonderful characters. In my case, the pace was pretty good as it didn't take long for me to finish reading. It's a great choice for those who are looking for a mystery book with a little fantasy in it.
